Locks and Kata

I spent some time this week going over the use of finger, wrist, arm and elbow locks in a street self defence, anti mugging situation. There is a very useful double handed X block (ju ji uke) that can be used to block, catch and then adapt to either a variety of locks, take downs or counter strikes. The students […]

Kata and Triangles

This week (Tuesday 17th and Thursday 19th July) I spent some time going over the Kata that the various students should be getting competent in. I have three new beginners in the club who normally come along on a Thursday but unfortunately Sam could not make it this week so Ben and Jaden went through Heian Nidan. Although they have not […]

Another successful grading

On Thursday (12.7.12) I had another student who was ready for grading. Abigail (or Abi) was going for 8th Kyu (Orange) belt. Abi is very keen on her karate but circumstances in her life have been conspiring to keep her away from the club more than she would like. For that reason she had beed stuck on 9th Kyu (Red) […]

Sochin Or Is It Suchi?

Having only really just got heian shodan and heian nidan I have to say this was extremely complex and I probably sucked at it, but then I am game for the learning experience and it was great to get some sort of insight into what is coming up WAAAAAY down the line, almost thank god for that!

Arm Locks

Arm Lock

Last night I had the students learning some new locks and practicing some old ones. This kind of session is enjoyed by all of the members. I use this to support attacks that are “up close and personal” such as mugging attacks and other street self defence. Great strength is not required just concentration.

Orange Thursday for Rick

Rick Orange Belt

Last Thursday Rick took a grading for Orange Belt (8th Kyu). Rick is a very focused man and it came as no surprise to me that he gave a good solid performance and passed the grading. In the Buntingford Karate Club we have no fixed dates for gradings and it is not about doing a set number of lessons. All members […]
